How to Extract & Identify Fonts from a PDF
Unlike web pages where you can simply inspect the source code, PDFs embed their fonts internally as binary data subsets. While some technical tools allow you to parse PDF metadata to extract font names, the visual recognition approach is often faster and works even when fonts are rasterized or outlined.
Method 1: The Visual Screenshot Approach (Recommended)
- Open your PDF document in any viewer (Acrobat, Chrome, Preview).
- Zoom in so the text is clear and sharp.
- Use Win+Shift+S (Windows) or ⌘⇧4 (Mac) to capture the specific line of text.
- Paste the image (Ctrl+V / ⌘V) into the tool above to get the visual match and free alternative.
Method 2: Adobe Acrobat Properties
- Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader.
- Navigate to File > Properties (or press Ctrl+D).
- Click the Fonts tab.
- Scroll through the list to find all embedded fonts. (Note: This gives you the name, but you'll still need our alternatives directory if it's a paid font).
