How to Get Better Font Suggestions From an Image

Achieving high accuracy in font identification depends on the quality and isolation of the letterforms in the image. Follow these three rules:

  • Crop Tightly: Only include the clean characters you want to match. Exclude background patterns, icons, and noisy graphics.
  • One Weight at a Time: If an image has bold headings and thin subtext, crop only the bold heading. Mixing sizes confuses stem-width measurement.
  • Use Lowercase Letters When Possible: Lowercase letters like a, g, e, r, t contain far more distinctive typographic signatures (terminals, bowls, apertures) than uppercase letters.

Understanding Font Licensing: Free vs Commercial

Typography licensing is often confusing. Here is the straightforward distinction:

SIL Open Font License (OFL)

Open-source font licenses define permitted uses and conditions. Check the license linked from the font's official specimen before using it in a project.

Commercial Desktop & Webfont License

Commercial license terms vary by foundry and use. Check the official terms for the specific family before publishing or embedding it.

Everything you need to know about image font identification, free alternatives, and privacy.

Upload an image containing text, crop around one line, and review suggested typefaces. The tool uses image features to shortlist families from a catalog of over 1,900 Google Fonts. Enter the exact cropped text to compare rendered shapes for leading candidates. Results are suggestions, not confirmed identifications.
Drop your image onto the tool above, or paste a screenshot from your clipboard with Ctrl+V (Windows) or ⌘V (Mac). Crop tightly around the text. The entire process runs in your browser — it's free, unlimited, and your image is never uploaded to any server.
Yes — unlimited scans, no account, no email, no credit card. The matching engine runs entirely inside your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API, so it costs us almost nothing to let you use it as much as you like.
Absolutely — screenshots of websites and apps are the easiest case. The letters are pixel-sharp, horizontal, and undistorted. Press Win+Shift+S (Windows) or ⌘⇧4 (Mac) to capture, then paste directly with Ctrl+V / ⌘V. Our screenshot font finder is optimized specifically for digital UI text.
Upload the logo image and crop tightly around the wordmark. Note that many logos use customized or hand-drawn lettering, so the tool will find the closest existing typeface rather than an exact match. Our logo font identifier is tuned for this workflow.
Yes — the entire matching library is built from Google Fonts. Every result links directly to the font specimen on Google Fonts, where you can download it for free and use it commercially. Think of it as a reverse Google Font search: give it a picture, get the font name.
The tool may suggest a commercial typeface based on broad style features and show a curated free alternative. Neither suggestion confirms the original font or guarantees an identical replacement; compare the specimens and check licensing before use.
Never. Your images never leave your device. All processing happens inside your browser's memory using the HTML5 Canvas API. When you close or refresh the page, the image data is gone. There is no server-side component that could store uploads.
We support PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, and SVG images up to 15 MB. You can also paste screenshots directly from your clipboard — no need to save the file first.
Crop tightly to just the text — no icons or backgrounds. Use a single weight and size per crop. Include several letters (a full word is ideal). Favour lowercase over uppercase. Keep text horizontal and in focus. Light text on dark backgrounds works fine.
Yes — every font card includes a 'Copy Tailwind v4' button for the modern @theme token snippet, plus standard webfont embed code with Google Fonts CDN links. One click to get production-ready CSS.
Font matching accuracy depends on the image quality and crop. Blurry images, very small text, heavy compression, or joined-up cursive scripts all reduce accuracy. Custom lettering (hand-drawn logos) won't have an exact match since no font exists for them. Try a tighter crop or a cleaner source image.
